2024 Powell Advanced Summer Institute 

The Holocaust in Eastern Europe

August 6-9, 2024 | At the Henry and Sandra Friedman Holocaust Center for Humanity, Seattle

The Holocaust Center for Humanity offers an intensive 4-day advanced summer institute designed for teachers of grades 8-12 who have been actively teaching the Holocaust for more than three years. 

Accommodations will be provided | Institute is limited to 20 participants | Teachers in the Pacific Northwest states are given first priority | 30 Washington State Clock Hours available. Clock hours meet Washington State CCDEI requirements.

In a collaborative environment, participants will explore topics related to Holocaust history in Eastern Europe, antisemitism, Holocaust denial/distortion, as well as other contemporary issues. Each day will focus on selected themes and will include reference and discussion of today’s world and practical applications for the classroom. Featured speakers will include scholars Dr. Sara Brown, Dr. Jeffrey Veidlinger, and Dr. Wendy Lower.

  • Eligible teachers will currently be teaching grades 8-12 in a classroom
  • Eligible teachers must have at least three years of experience teaching the Holocaust
  • In the year following the Institute, attendees will be responsible for incorporating at least one or more of the lessons/concepts from the Seminar into their curriculum

Participation Fee: $100 due upon acceptance to the program ($50 will be returned upon attendance).
