Susan Covey
Susan Covey honors her mother’s memory by sharing her Holocaust survival story, which also encompasses the experiences of two other survivors and numerous family members. Ruth Lehman, born in Barsinghausen, Germany, in 1914, fled to London in 1939 at the age of 25 with her husband, Egon Frankel. Egon had been arrested during Kristallnacht and when he was released, the couple left Germany, sponsored by friends in London. In London, Ruth utilized her dressmaking skills to earn money privately despite lacking a work permit.
Simultaneously, Ruth’s brother, Hans Lehman, along with their mother and sister, managed to leave Germany and settle in Seattle. In 1944, Ruth and Egon moved to Seattle, sponsored by Hans, where they established themselves and Susan was born. Egon struggled to adapt in the U.S. and passed away in 1950.
Ruth continued her dressmaking work to support the family and later remarried Marton Metzon, a Danish freedom fighter, blending their families and welcoming another child, Jeanette.
Susan shares her family’s survival story through testimony, documents, and personal photos from her mother, stepfather, and other relatives.
