Program details

Who should join the Student Leadership Board?

• Students in the state of Washington who are able to attend meetings in person in one of the following locations: Seattle, Spokane, or Southwest Washington
• Grades 7-12
• From any and all backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions
• Passionate and motivated students who want to collaborate on activism, volunteering, and project-based learning
• Students interested to dive deeper to learn about the Holocaust and other genocides

What does the Student Leadership Board do? What's the commitment? 

• Participate in meetings twice a month. These meetings will be in person. The Seattle SLB will meet at the Holocaust Center in downtown Seattle on Wednesday afternoons. The Spokane and Southwest Washington SLBs will meet in TBD locations and times in their local areas.
• Work together to carry out projects that support the Holocaust Center's mission and provide real-world leadership experience
• Volunteer at several Holocaust Center events throughout the year
• Provide feedback on the Holocaust Center's programs and serve as ambassadors
• Hear and learn from community members, Holocaust and genocide survivors and their descendants, and other leaders
• Serve on the Student Leadership Board from October 2023 through June 2024

What are the goals of the Student Leadership Board?

• SLB members will enhance their historical understanding of the Holocaust and other genocides
• Members will be able to understand and make connections between the Holocaust, other historic genocides or injustices, and those going on today
• Members will collaborate as part of a group or team
• Members will feel empowered, supported, and comfortable assuming a leadership role amongst their fellow SLB members
• Members will be more inclined to speak out or be an upstander if they see a wrong occurring around them

SEATTLE

Led by Lexi Jason & Morgan Romero, Education Program Managers at the Holocaust for Humanity in Seattle. Morgan and Lexi love working with students and are excited to welcome back returning SLB members and and meet the new members in 2023-24.

SPOKANE

Led by Andrew Olmsted, a middle school English and history teacher in Spokane, Washington. Andrew has been working with the Holocaust Center for Humanity since 2018. He is a Holocaust Center for Humanity Educator for Change and a Powell Fellow. Andrew is a Defiant Requiem Teacher Ambassador and has completed Holocaust Education Trainings through the Holocaust Center for Humanity, Facing History and Ourselves, and Yahad in Unum. He also serves on the Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust Planning Committee.

KALAMA & VANCOUVER

Led by Michael Ready & Robert Cozzi - Michael Ready is a high school teacher at Kalama High School teaching both history and theater. He has worked closely with the Holocaust Center since 2019 and is a Powell Fellow. Robert Cozzi is a history teacher at Heritage High School. He has worked with the Holocaust Center since 2021 and participated in the Center’s trip to Poland in the summer of 2022.

Student retreat details

We are so excited to be organizing another fall kickoff retreat this year! The purpose of this retreat is to start the school year by building strong connections between the three SLB groups. It will take place at Camp Kalsman from Friday, September 13 - Sunday, September 15. Students will engage in Holocaust lessons, leadership exercises, and team-building activities under the supervision of HCH staff.
