Lorri Staal
Lorri Staal tells the story of her father, Abraham (“Aby” or “Andy”) Staal, who was hidden in the Netherlands by members of the Dutch resistance for two years.
Her father was born in Amsterdam in 1928. He grew up in the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam surrounded by a large family. He recalls visiting his many cousins and both sets of grandparents as a young child. After the Nazis invaded in 1940, there were many restrictions placed on the lives of the Dutch Jews. His family left Amsterdam in 1941 and moved to Ermelo, a small farming village. In 1942, they went into hiding there.
In 2016, Lorri received an email from one of the families who had hidden her father. Through his contacts, Lorri connected with descendants of 10 people who hid her father from 1943-1945. Lorri visited the Netherlands to meet these rescuers and their families. Lorri pays tribute to these courageous families as she tells the story of her father’s life in hiding and the dangerous conditions for those who hid him.
Lorri lives and works in Seattle. She is a lawyer by training and is currently the Executive Director of Music of Remembrance. She is proud to present her father’s story, and let you meet the people who hid a young Jewish boy during the Holocaust.
